The Jewish holiday of Passover begins Saturday, and temples in Palm Beach will celebrate the holiday commemorating the Jewish people’s exodus from ancient Egypt with a variety of events.

New Synagogue will host a service in commemoration of the Fast of the Firstborn at 9 a.m. Thursday.

An invitation-only Seder is slated for April 12 and 13. The synagogue also will host candle lightings and holiday services on the evenings of April 12, 13, 18 and 19.

Last Sunday, New Synagogue hosted a family Passover workshop where children learned the importance of the holiday through family activities and song.

New Synagogue’s Rabbi Barak Bar-Chaim said that the Passover story reminds worshippers of the moral responsibility of not taking God’s gifts for granted.

“Passover commemorates the Divine deliverance of the Jewish people from their harsh servitude in Egypt. God made it clear to the nation that the purpose of their freedom was to receive the Torah, the book detailing their moral conduct and responsibilities,” he said. “We are privileged to live in the United States, a country founded on the celebration of freedom. Passover teaches us to partner our freedoms with moral responsibility for others, and accountability to God.”
